GADADU + BenBen at The Owl

GADADU returns to The Owl on October 26 with a new chamber configuration of voice, strings and piano. We’re sharing the bill with songwriter and multi-instrumentalist BenBen, who creates dreamy songscapes with whimsical vocals, guitar, and a rotating cast of other instruments. For this show, we’re excited to play both new and old tunes with this intimate, acoustic instrumentation.

Evelyn Frances / GADADU / Nikia Yung

Come on out for a night of music at Gold Sounds! 7pm Doors, 8pm Show. $10 at the door.

EVELYN FRANCES
https://www.evelynfrancesmusic.com

For Evelyn Frances, music is a textural, tangible experience. Her music lives in the grainy earth found in the rich-soils of the old growth forests. Her intricate vocals paired with her sensitive lyrics create a space for contemplation, reflection and meditation.

Evelyn was born in Mons, Belgium and lived everywhere from South Korea to the Midwest; Upstate New York and many places in between. This constant fluctuation in space, culture, and environment allowed for a real sense of the earth and body as home. With an ingrained sense of respect for both of these home spaces, her music is a direct reflection of that and carries a sense of urgency to care for our rapidly changing, human-impacted earth.

As a vocalist, pianist, guitarist, and flutist with a background in classical and jazz, Evelyn Frances creates a delicate blend of experimental, folk, and electronica, with a pulse firmly rooted in the organic. Her vocal melodies and tone are strongly influenced by the flute, which allows her lyrics to meld and flow into a time-lapse, as if you were watching a plant sprout and grow in a dream state.

Her debut album, entitled "Seed," is intended to be experienced as a full cycle from start to finish. Produced and mixed with Phil Joly at Electric Lady Studios and Shifted Recording, it will be out this year.

GADADU
http://www.gadadu.com

With a kaleidoscopic sense of time and texture, GADADU weaves odd-meter grooves, synth-spiked orchestral arrangements, and unorthodox song forms into a dreamy, soulful sound. Formed in 2013 by bandleaders Hannah Selin and Nicki Adams, GADADU has since expanded to include Patrick Adams (trumpet), Ayumi Ishito (tenor sax), Daniel Stein (bass) and Arthur Vint (drums).

NIKIA YUNG
www.nikiamusic.com

NIKIA YUNG, MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST AND SONGWRITER, USES THE VIOLIN IN AN UNCONVENTIONAL WAY, BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CLASSICAL, POP AND SOUL. WITH EMOTIONALLY-CHARGED LYRICS AND CINEMATIC LINES, HER MUSIC IS DESCRIBED AS PURE AND BEAUTIFUL WITH A TOUCH OF BOLD SASS.

Nikia Yung grew up in a small farm town, Finksburg, MD. Surrounded by music at an early age, Yung followed in the footsteps of her mother, a locally-renowned piano instructor with a soulful voice and gospel songwriting chops. Yung was immersed in music by the age of seven, studying piano and violin, competing in competitions, performing in recitals and orchestras.

After attending the Peabody Preparatory throughout high school and beginning her bachelors in Music Performance at the Peabody Institute of Music, Yung broke ties with her home state and traveled to the University of Delaware to finish her degree. It was there in the practice rooms between masterclasses and rehearsals that Yung fell in love with the art of songwriting.

Following college, Yung moved back to Baltimore, MD and performed the circuit with Mason Vixon, a local country-rock band favorite for nearly four years opening for American Idol Contestants, providing pre-show entertainment for Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, and various harbor festivals.

In 2014 Yung released her first solo album, "Taller Than Trees", a 10-track record with some of Yung's earliest creations as a songwriter and made her way to Nashville, TN. While in the great Music City, Yung kept busy performing regularly with Joanna Barbera, a published singer-songwriter, Hip-Hop sensation, Stealing Oceans, and various other artists and bands. Clocking many hours in the studio cutting violin on other tracks and projects, Yung became a quick dial for artists needing lush strings or beautiful melodic solo lines.

Now based out of Lafayette, LA, Yung has settled into a new city with a handful of new tricks. Determined to break the mold and perception of violin, Yung is pushing the limits and writing new material featuring violin in an unconventional way. Learning how to use both, violin and voice, she is transforming genre and creating a new sound.

"Wild Beasts", a 6-song EP is due to drop summer of 2019. Featuring songs with a bigger punch and a sea of strings, this EP will be vastly different than Yung's earlier writing. Hold on to your knickers, folks...

The power of Mello's entrancing voice and vocal range draws people in, and her lyrical skills hold them for the duration of a performance. Her songs stir people with dreamy music and usher them through their days with calls to action to listen deeply to the earth and each other.

Her current projects include Tranche (Bubble Bath Records), a dreamscape grunge band; Matron, an indie math rock band; Phantosmia, an ambient-electronic solo recording endeavour/live improv collective; and Dance Theatre Surreality (DTS), a nonprofit and feminist Parisian-American creative company for which she serves as resident composer. GADADU plays adventurous, groove-based music with elements of soul, jazz and pop. The band's unusual instrumentation results in a wildly colorful improvisational framework swept together by lead singer Hannah Selin, whose haunting vocals are often doubled by viola or vocoder. GADADU released their debut album And I See Night in February 2015, followed by animated video-single "Bay Songs" in November 2016. Their second album is scheduled for release in late spring 2018.
